The Department of Sociology was established in 1972 under the Quaid-i-Azam University Ordinance. M. Sc Sociology was started in Fall 2011. Nevertheless, the Department, with the struggle of Dr. Muhammad Zaman and other faculty members, became fully functional in 2014. Initially, Mr. Farhan Ahmad Faiz took charge of the Department. Later, Dr. Muhammad Zaman was appointed as In-Charge of the Department of Sociology in 2014. Dr. Sadia Saeed remained in-charge of the Department from 2017 to 2019,In 2019 Dr. Muhammad Zaman was appointed as the founding Chairman of the Department of Sociology. On September 1, 2022, the Department status was elevated to the School of Sociology and Prof. Dr. Hazir Ullah was appointed as the Founding Director of the School of Sociology.
The School of Sociology intends to create indigenous sociological knowledge and compare it with the cosmopolitan, on the one hand, and to apply professional research skills to influence social policies for desirable social development, on the other hand. This is possible through acquiring skills, training, and promoting young scholars and academicians. The School of Sociology has established a unique identity because of its focus on contemporary social issues. It provides solid training in statistics, sociological theory, research methodology, and the subfields of the disciplines. In addition, the School of Sociology focuses on rigorous training to prepare students for research, teaching, social service, and social welfare missions.
The graduates over here are concerned with understanding the human condition, past and present, and equipped with the skills of developing rapport in unfamiliar situations, collecting and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data, thinking analytically at the macro and micro levels, and communicating effectively, both orally and in writing. All of these skills are highly relevant to the multicultural and global world. As a result, sociology students in the School of Sociology are well-prepared for further academic study and for pursuing careers in social services, criminal justice, education, research, health, social and corporate sector, marketing, business consulting, policy analysis, program and projects evaluation, community participation, and development.
